Book Proposals, Outlines and Rewrites

Need a proposal for an agent, a full outline, or a stalled draft rescued? We can start, restructure or finish a manuscript you have already begun.

How Our Ghostwriting Process Works, Step by Step

A clear process protects your time and your voice. Here is what you can expect from the first call to the final manuscript.

Step 1

Discovery call

We learn about your book, your reader and your goals. You tell us what the book should do for you, and we tell you honestly what it will take. You leave with a recommended scope and a quote.

Process step connector
Step 2

Writer match and voice sample

We match you with a writer who has experience in your genre. They study how you speak and write, then produce a short sample so you can confirm the voice feels right before the real work begins.

Process step connector
Step 3

Outline approval

Your writer builds a chapter-by-chapter outline from your interviews and materials. You review it, move things around and approve it. Nothing is drafted until the structure is right.

Process step connector
Step 4

Chapter-by-chapter drafting

The manuscript arrives in milestones, not all at once at the end. You read each batch, give feedback and keep the book moving in the direction you want.

Process step connector
Step 5

Revisions

After the full draft, you request changes and your writer revises. Revisions are unlimited at the chapter level, so we keep going until the book sounds like you and says what you meant.

Process step connector
Step 6

Delivery and publishing handoff

You receive the final manuscript, and we explain your options for editing, cover design, formatting and publishing. Many authors continue with us, and some take the manuscript elsewhere.

Ready to Turn Your Ideas Into a Finished Book?

Work with a professional ghostwriter who captures your voice and delivers a manuscript you are proud to publish.

What Is Book Ghostwriting and How Does It Work?

Book ghostwriting means a professional writer drafts your book in your voice while you remain the author. You supply the ideas, stories and direction. The ghostwriter supplies the craft, structure and hours of writing.

Many of the books you see on a shelf were shaped with a ghostwriter, a collaborator or an editor who wrote far more than the cover suggests. It is a normal part of publishing, and it is especially common for leaders, experts and people with a remarkable life story who are not full-time writers.

The working relationship is simple. You talk, and the writer listens. Through interviews, voice notes, existing articles, talks or rough drafts, your ghostwriter collects what you know and how you say it. They build an outline with you, draft the chapters in your voice, and revise until the manuscript reads the way you would write it on your best day.

Credit is flexible. Some authors keep the ghostwriter fully confidential. Others add an "as told to" line or a thank-you in the acknowledgments. Both are common, and we explain the options before the contract is signed.

A ghostwriter is not a shortcut around having something to say. The ideas, experience and final approval stay with you. What changes is that you no longer have to learn long-form book structure while running a business, a ministry or a busy life.

Is Ghostwriting Right for You? A Quick Self-Check

If most of these statements describe you, a ghostwriter is likely a good fit.

  • You have knowledge, stories or a message that people ask you about again and again.
  • You can talk about your topic for an hour, but sitting down to write chapters feels slow or stressful.
  • You want the book to sound like you, not like a stranger.
  • You are willing to give interviews and review drafts.
  • You value your time and want a professional process with clear milestones.
  • You plan to use the book for your business, ministry, speaking or legacy.

If you enjoy writing and mainly want expert feedback, editing or coaching may serve you better. If you want to learn to write long-form yourself, a writing coach can help. We are happy to tell you honestly which option fits.

Common Myths About Ghostwriting, and What Is Actually True

A lot of hesitation about ghostwriting comes from half-truths. Here is how the common worries hold up in practice.

Myth: "If I use a ghostwriter, it is not really my book."

The book is built from your knowledge, your stories and your decisions. The ghostwriter handles the drafting. Many respected books across business, politics, sport and ministry were written this way, and readers care whether the book helps them, not who typed it.

Myth: "A ghostwriter will make me sound generic."

A skilled ghostwriter does the opposite. They listen for your phrases, your humor, your habits of thought and your way of explaining things, then keep those details on the page. That is why the voice sample and the interviews matter so much.

Myth: "It is only for celebrities and CEOs."

Coaches, consultants, clinicians, pastors, teachers and first-time storytellers hire ghostwriters every day. If you have knowledge people ask you about, you are a candidate for a book.

Myth: "It means I do nothing."

You still invest time. You give interviews, review chapters, answer questions and approve the final manuscript. What you skip is the blank-page struggle and the months of drafting.

Myth: "It is cheating."

It is a professional service, the same way people hire designers, editors and accountants. It becomes a problem only when someone misrepresents facts or claims expertise they do not have, and we do not help with that.

Common Myths About Ghostwriting, and What Is Actually True

What Is Included in Every Ghostwriting Project

Whatever the size of your book, these are the building blocks of a well-run project.

  • A discovery call and written scope. We define the book's purpose, reader, length and chapter plan before any writing starts.
  • Writer matching and a voice sample. You confirm the voice early, when changes are still easy.
  • Structured interviews. Your writer asks the questions that pull out the stories, steps and examples a reader will need.
  • A detailed outline. You see the whole shape of the book before the first chapter is drafted.
  • Milestone drafts. Chapters arrive in batches so you can react early, not at the end.
  • Unlimited revisions at the chapter level. If a chapter does not feel right, you give feedback and your writer rewrites it at no extra cost until it does, and you approve each chapter before the next one begins.
  • A named point of contact. You always know who to ask when you have a question.
  • Confidential handling of your material. Recordings, notes and drafts stay private to your project team.
  • A finished manuscript in standard formats. You receive a clean document ready for editing, design and publishing.

Anything outside the scope, such as a book proposal, a second round of major restructuring or full developmental editing, is quoted separately so you always know what you are paying for.

What Is Included in Every Ghostwriting Project

What We Need From You

A ghostwriter can only capture what you share. A little preparation makes the book richer and the process faster.

Your time

Plan for regular interviews, usually by phone or video, and time to read each batch of chapters. Authors who respond within a few days keep their projects on schedule.

Your material

Anything you already have helps: talks, slide decks, blog posts, newsletters, podcasts, client stories, journals, photographs, timelines or half-finished drafts. You do not need to organize it. Your writer will.

Your answers

Interview questions are designed to be easy to answer out loud. For example:

  • Who is this book for, and what do you want them to do or feel after reading it?
  • What is the story that changed the way you think about this topic?
  • What mistake do you see people make again and again?
  • What is the one idea you want readers to remember a year from now?
  • Which examples, clients or experiences best prove your point, and which are you comfortable sharing?

Your decisions

You approve the outline, the voice and the final draft. If something changes in your thinking along the way, tell us early. Adjustments are far easier in the outline stage than after a chapter is written.

From Interview to Chapter: What the Process Looks Like in Practice

Seeing how raw conversation becomes polished writing helps many authors relax about the process.

Imagine an interview about the day a client lost their biggest customer. In the recording, the story wanders. There are pauses, a joke, three false starts and a lesson that appears only near the end. A ghostwriter listens for the real structure underneath: the situation, the turning point and the lesson.

Step one: capture

The interview is recorded and transcribed. Your writer highlights the strongest moments, the phrases that sound most like you and the details a reader will remember.

Step two: shape

The story is arranged so it opens with the tension, moves through the turning point and arrives at the lesson with the weight it deserves. Unneeded detours are set aside.

Step three: voice

Your writer rewrites the story using your rhythm, your word choices and your sense of humor. The draft should read as if you told it carefully on a good day.

Step four: your review

You read the chapter, correct facts and add details. Your corrections guide the next batch, so the voice gets closer with every round.

Who Hires a Book Ghostwriter?

People hire ghostwriters because their expertise is valuable and their time is limited, not because they cannot think or speak well.

The most common clients are not professional writers. They are experts who want a book to carry their message further than a single conversation can.

  • Founders and executives who want a book that builds credibility, supports speaking and opens doors with clients and investors.
  • Doctors, lawyers, coaches and consultants who explain the same ideas to clients every week and want them in a book that works while they sleep.
  • Speakers and trainers with talks, slide decks and recordings that deserve a permanent, readable form.
  • People with a life story that friends and family keep telling them to write down.
  • First-time authors who have a strong idea but have never planned or drafted a full manuscript.
  • Pastors and ministry leaders turning sermons, teaching and testimony into books. If that is you, see our Christian book ghostwriting services.

If you are not sure whether ghostwriting is the right fit, bring us your idea. We will tell you plainly whether a ghostwriter, an editor or a writing coach is the better choice.

Who Hires a Book Ghostwriter?

Ghostwriting for Different Types of Books

Each kind of book has its own structure and reader expectations. Your writer is matched to the type you are creating.

Business and thought leadership books

These books explain an idea, a framework or a method and show why it works. We help you sharpen the central argument, build chapters around it and support it with stories, examples and clear takeaways. See our business book writing services for more detail.

Memoir and life story

A memoir is a story, not a timeline. Your writer finds the theme, chooses the scenes that carry it and shapes them with tension and reflection. Our autobiography writing and biography writing pages explain the process.

Self-help, health and wellness

Readers expect practical steps they can follow. We organize your methods into a logical journey, add exercises or reflection prompts if you want them, and keep the tone warm and credible. Health and legal topics may need extra review, so we flag claims that should be checked by a qualified professional.

Fiction

Fiction ghostwriting starts with your premise, characters and world. We build the plot, pacing and chapters to match your genre, and you approve each stage. Read more about our fiction book writing.

Ebooks and short guides

A focused ebook can establish authority quickly. It works well as a lead magnet, a companion to a course or a first step toward a longer book. Our ebook writing services suit that goal.

Ghostwriting for Different Types of Books

Why Authors Choose Christian Faith Press

We run ghostwriting like a partnership. You get one team that can take a book from first interview to published copy, with clear communication at every step.

One team from first draft to finished book

Writing is only part of the job. After the manuscript is finished, the same company can handle editing, cover design, publishing and marketing. You do not have to manage five different vendors or explain your book five times.

Writers matched to your book

A business book and a memoir need different skills. We match you by genre and subject, then confirm the voice with a sample before you commit to the full manuscript.

Your voice stays in charge

We write to your instructions, not to a template. You approve the outline, read each batch of chapters and decide what stays.

Clear contracts and confidentiality

Ownership, credit, confidentiality, revisions and payment milestones are written down before work begins, so there are no surprises later.

Experienced, US-based writers

Our writers are based in the United States and know American publishing standards. They work across more than 20 genres, including memoir, fiction, business books, children's books, self-help, sci-fi and romance, so we can match you with someone whose background fits your subject, tone and audience.

A real interview before a single word is written

Your writer starts with an in-depth interview by phone, video or written questionnaire, so the first draft is built on your goals and your voice, not guesses.

Fast, clear communication

Tell us about your project and our team replies within 24 hours.

Why Authors Choose Christian Faith Press

Who Owns the Book? Rights, Credit and Confidentiality

You do. When the work is finished and paid for, the manuscript is yours, and you decide how, where and whether to publish it.

Ownership is the first question most authors ask, and it deserves a straight answer in writing. With us, you keep 100% of the rights to your book: the copyright, the manuscript, the royalties and any adaptations. We make no claim to your work. In U.S. copyright terms this is handled through the agreement, and the U.S. Copyright Office explains the work made for hire rules in plain language. We recommend reading them before you sign any agreement.

What your agreement should cover

  • Who owns the finished manuscript and when ownership transfers
  • Whether your ghostwriter may be named, and where
  • Confidentiality of your project, with an NDA signed on every project on request
  • Number of revision rounds and what counts as a revision
  • Payment milestones and what happens if the schedule changes
  • What the writer may reuse, which is normally nothing from your book

Credit options

You can list yourself as sole author, add an "as told to" credit, or thank your writer in the acknowledgments. Authors choose what fits their field and audience.

Protect the finished book

After publication, you can register your copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office. This is not legal advice. For contract questions specific to your situation, speak with a qualified attorney.

How Much Does a Book Ghostwriter Cost?

The price depends mainly on length, research needs, the writer's experience and your timeline. The honest answer is that it varies, so we quote each project individually.

Ghostwriting prices are not standard across the industry. You will see everything from low marketplace rates to premium agency fees, and the gap usually reflects the quality of the writer, the depth of research and how much support is included.

What changes the price

  • Length. A 20,000-word guide and a 70,000-word memoir are very different projects.
  • Research. A book that needs interviews, fact-checking and sources takes more hours than one built from your own stories.
  • Complexity. Technical, medical, legal or heavily structured books demand specialist writers.
  • Timeline. A faster schedule costs more because the writer must clear their calendar.
  • Extras. Proposals, extra revision rounds, editing and design add to the scope.

What the range looks like

Professional ghostwriting in the United States typically runs from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands, depending on the length and complexity of the book, the genre, the amount of research and the writer's experience. A short guide sits at one end of that range and a long, research-heavy book at the other.

How our quotes work

Start with a free 30-minute consultation. After that, we send a written, fixed-price proposal, usually within 48 to 72 hours. It states the scope, the word count, the milestones and what is included, with no hidden fees, so you can compare it fairly with any other quote. We offer packages across a range of budgets.

Curious how the costs break down in more detail? Read our guide on how much a ghostwriter costs.

How to Compare Ghostwriting Quotes

Two quotes that look similar can describe very different projects. Compare these points before you decide.

  • Word count. Is the price tied to a specific length, and what happens if the book grows?
  • Revision limits. How many rounds are included, and how are extra rounds charged?
  • Interviews. How many are included, and who conducts them?
  • Research. Does the price cover fact-checking and source gathering?
  • Writer experience. Who exactly will write your book, and what have they written before?
  • Payment schedule. Are payments tied to milestones you can see?
  • Ownership and credit. Is it clear who owns what, and when?
  • Extras. Are editing, formatting or proposal work included or separate?

A lower price that leaves out interviews, research or revisions often ends up costing more. We write our quotes so these items are visible, which makes honest comparison easy.

How to Compare Ghostwriting Quotes

How Long Does It Take to Ghostwrite a Book?

Most full-length books take about three to six months from the first session to a final approved draft. A shorter ebook can move faster.

Timelines depend on length, how quickly you can give feedback and how much source material already exists. The phases below show where the time goes.

  • Planning and interviews: usually the first few weeks, while we capture your ideas and agree the outline.
  • Drafting: the longest phase, delivered in chapter batches so you can steer as the book grows.
  • Revisions: the final weeks, where your feedback shapes the finished manuscript.

For perspective, writing a full-length book on your own commonly takes 300 to 500 hours. A ghostwriter turns that multi-year effort into a realistic three to six month project. You receive a written timeline before any writing begins, and we hold to it.

What speeds a project up: clear goals, existing notes or recordings, and fast feedback. What slows it down: long gaps between reviews, changing the outline late and adding new topics mid-draft.

How Long Does It Take to Ghostwrite a Book?

How Long Should Your Book Be? A Practical Guide

There is no perfect length, but readers and publishers have expectations. These ranges give you a starting point.

Type of bookTypical lengthNotes
Short guide or lead-magnet ebook10,000 to 25,000 wordsFast to produce and ideal for building authority
Business or self-help book40,000 to 60,000 wordsReaders value clarity over length
Memoir60,000 to 90,000 wordsDepends on the story and the scenes you include
Novel70,000 to 100,000 wordsVaries by genre, and fantasy and thrillers often run longer
Devotional or gift book15,000 to 40,000 wordsShort, focused entries work well

These are general guidelines drawn from common publishing practice, not rules. Your writer will help you choose a target that fits your goals and reader, and length affects both timeline and cost.

Ghostwriting vs Co-Writing vs Editing vs AI Tools

These options solve different problems. The right one depends on how much of the writing you want to do yourself.

OptionWho writes the draftBest forKeep in mind
GhostwritingA professional writer, using your ideas and voiceBusy experts, leaders and storytellersYou still supply the material and approve everything
Co-writingYou and a collaborator share the writingAuthors who want to stay hands-onTakes more of your time, and credit is shared by agreement
EditingYou write, an editor improves your draftAuthors who can already write a full manuscriptAn editor will not create content you have not written
AI writing toolsSoftware generates text from promptsBrainstorming and early notesOutput needs heavy human work, and it cannot supply your experience or voice

We use people, not generic text generators, to write your book. If your goal is a manuscript that sounds like you and carries your real experience, a human ghostwriter working from your interviews is the dependable route. If you have already written a draft, our developmental editing and book editing services may be a better match. For a full overview of how we write for authors, see our book writing services.

How to Choose the Right Ghostwriter

A good ghostwriter is a skilled listener first and a skilled writer second. Use this checklist when you compare options, including us.

  • Ask for samples in your genre. Style matters, so read real work, not marketing copy.
  • Ask who will actually write your book. Make sure the writer you meet is the writer you get.
  • Request a voice sample. It shows how well they can capture you before you commit.
  • Read the contract closely. Check ownership, confidentiality, revisions and payment milestones.
  • Understand the process. You should know how interviews, drafts and feedback will work.
  • Check communication. Fast, clear replies early on usually predict a smooth project.
  • Be cautious about guarantees. No one can guarantee sales, bestseller status or publishing deals.
  • Compare value, not just price. The cheapest option often costs more once rewrites begin.

The Authors Guild publishes helpful guidance for authors who are reviewing contracts and service providers. Ready to see how we match writers to books? Talk to an expert and tell us about your project.

How to Choose the Right Ghostwriter

Red Flags to Avoid When Hiring a Ghostwriter

Most disappointing ghostwriting experiences share a few warning signs. Watch for them with any provider.

  • Guaranteed bestseller or guaranteed sales. Nobody controls that, so the promise is a sign of weak ethics.
  • No samples and no named writer. If they will not show relevant work, you cannot judge fit.
  • Vague contracts. If ownership, credit and confidentiality are unclear, ask for clarity before paying.
  • Pressure to pay everything up front. A professional project has milestones.
  • Recycled or templated text. Your book should come from your material, not from stock paragraphs.
  • Slow, vague communication from day one. The pattern rarely improves after you sign.
  • Prices far below the market. Very cheap work is usually rushed, rewritten text or reused material.

Questions worth asking any provider

  • Who will write my book, and can I see work in my genre?
  • How will you capture my voice?
  • How many interviews and revision rounds are included?
  • Who owns the finished manuscript, and when?
  • How do you protect my confidentiality?
  • What happens if I am not happy with a draft?
Red Flags to Avoid When Hiring a Ghostwriter

Common Mistakes Authors Make, and How to Avoid Them

A few simple habits separate smooth projects from stressful ones.

Starting without a clear reader

A book for "everyone" speaks to no one. Decide who you are writing for and what they should be able to do afterward. This one decision shapes every chapter.

Changing the outline late

Restructuring a finished chapter costs time. Use the outline stage to question everything, then commit.

Waiting too long to give feedback

Long gaps break the writer's momentum and weaken the voice. Review each batch promptly, even if your comments are short.

Trying to say everything

The best books are focused. Save extra ideas for a second book, a series or your blog.

Skipping editing

Ghostwriting produces a strong manuscript. A separate edit still catches inconsistencies and polishes language. Plan for editing and proofreading before publication.

Treating publishing as an afterthought

Cover design, formatting, distribution and marketing shape how readers find your book. Start thinking about them while the manuscript is in progress.

Common Mistakes Authors Make, and How to Avoid Them

Working With a Ghostwriter: Practical Do's and Don'ts

A good working relationship makes the book better. These habits help.

Do

  • Share your real stories, including the awkward or imperfect ones. They make books memorable.
  • Tell your writer what you do not want in the book as clearly as what you do.
  • Give specific feedback. "I would never say this" is useful, and so is "I would say it like this."
  • Keep records of facts, names and dates, and tell your writer which details are sensitive.

Do not

  • Do not wait weeks between feedback rounds.
  • Do not rewrite the whole chapter yourself in the margins. Tell your writer what to change and let them do it.
  • Do not add major new topics after the outline is approved unless you are willing to adjust the schedule.
  • Do not publish claims, numbers or quotations you cannot support. Your name is on the book.

From Finished Manuscript to Published Book

A completed manuscript is a big milestone, and it is also the start of the publishing work. We can support every stage after the writing.

Many authors want one team to carry the project through. When you are ready, we can help with each next step.

You are never required to use our other services. If you prefer to publish elsewhere, the manuscript is yours to take.

How a Book Helps Your Brand, Business or Ministry

A published book works as a long-term asset. It keeps introducing you to new people long after a single talk or meeting ends.

  • Credibility. A book signals depth and commitment to your subject.
  • Speaking and media. Hosts and event organizers often prefer guests who have written a book.
  • Lead generation. A chapter download, a book offer or a bonus resource can bring ideal clients into your world.
  • Training and onboarding. Teams, students and clients can read your method in your own words.
  • Legacy. A memoir or a teaching book preserves what you know for family, community and future readers.

Book Ghostwriting FAQs

Straight answers to the questions authors ask most before hiring a ghostwriter.

What is a book ghostwriter and what do they do?
A book ghostwriter is a professional writer who drafts your book in your voice. They interview you, build an outline with you, write the chapters and revise based on your feedback. You remain the author and approve the final manuscript.
Is hiring a ghostwriter ethical or legal?
Yes. Ghostwriting is a long-standing, legal practice in publishing. It is honest as long as the ideas, experience and final approval are yours and your agreement is clear about credit. For legal questions about your situation, speak with an attorney.
Do I own the copyright to a book a ghostwriter writes?
In a standard agreement, yes. The writer assigns the rights to you, so the finished manuscript is yours. Ownership terms should be written into the contract before work begins.
How much does it cost to hire a ghostwriter for a book?
Professional ghostwriting generally ranges from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands, depending on length, genre, research and the writer's experience. After a free 30-minute consultation we send a written, fixed-price proposal, usually within 48 to 72 hours, with no hidden fees.
How long does it take to ghostwrite a book?
Most full-length books take about three to six months from the first session to a final approved draft. Shorter projects are quicker. Your feedback speed and the amount of source material also affect the schedule.
Will the book sound like me?
That is the goal. Your writer studies how you speak and write, produces a voice sample for your approval, and revises until the manuscript reads like you.
Can my ghostwriter's name stay confidential?
Yes. Many authors choose full confidentiality. Others add an "as told to" credit or an acknowledgment. We agree on this in writing at the start.
What do you need from me to get started?
Your idea and goals are enough to begin. Interviews, voice recordings, notes, talks, articles or existing drafts all help your writer capture your material accurately.
Can you ghostwrite if I only have an idea or recordings?
Yes. We often start from an idea, a set of recordings or a rough outline. Your writer builds the structure with you through interviews.
Do you also edit, design and publish the book?
Yes. After the manuscript is complete, we can handle editing, cover design, formatting, publishing and marketing, or you can take the manuscript to another provider.
